The first World Rainforest Day was launched on June 22nd, 2017 by Rainforest Partnership as a collaborative effort to raise awareness and encourage action to protect the world’s rainforests. Rainforest Partnership is an international non-profit based in Austin, Texas dedicated to protecting and regenerating tropical rainforests through
Rainforests are vital for the survival of life on Earth. We depend on them for 20% of the oxygen we breathe and the freshwater we drink. They absorb our carbon dioxide, stabilize climate patterns, and are home to half the world’s plant and animal species.
Yet every minute, we lose two football fields of rainforests, which threatens our biodiversity and imperils our planet’s health. Deforestation alone produces one-fifth of global carbon dioxide emissions that cause climate change, more than that of all cars and trucks on Earth. However, reversing deforestation could cut global emissions by a third.
World Rainforest Day is an opportunity to celebrate this precious natural resource each year and take action to preserve it. Our network of partner organizations spanning ten different countries from five different continents is the catalyst for millions of people’s awareness and behaviors. We will create a positive impact on rainforests for years to come.
